South Australia's peak environment organisation Conservation SA has established a community environment space in the heart of Adelaide.
For years you may have walked past the old rundown bus station at 111 Franklin Street: covered with graffiti and surrounded by temporary fencing and weeds.
In 2014 Conservation SA noticed a sign calling for Expressions of Interest to lease and ‘reactivate’ the site. We immediately saw the potential, and were successful in our pitch to lease the site from Adelaide City Council.
The vision
The Joinery is a space for South Australians to come to connect and create a better future together.
Our community is joined by a love for nature and sustainable living. It's here we can show, share and live the positive change we all want.
The Common Ground Community Garden is full of veggie patches, fruit trees, chooks, bees, native plants, sculptures, murals, rain garden, solar panels and bike workshops. Inside features the Adelaide Sustainability Centre, energy demonstration, environmental displays, art and performance, and extensive meeting, exhibition and event spaces to hire.
Nature: Together
As the 'front door' for the environment, The Joinery is home to a fantastic mix of environment, sustainability and community groups. Already there is a wonderful sense of shared positive energy.
This is an open and welcoming space to connect a community who have a love for nature and care about living sustainably. We want everyone to be able to come here to be inspired and empowered together.
So many enthusiastic and generous volunteers and other supporters have already been involved so far.
The Joinery has always been for community, by community — so it is up to all of us to help create it.
The land and country
Conservation SA and the tenants of The Joinery acknowledge that we meet on the traditional country of the Kaurna people of the Adelaide Plains. We recognise and respect their cultural heritage, beliefs and relationship with the land. We acknowledge that they are of continuing importance to the Kaurna people living today. We offer our respect to Kaurna elders past, present and future, and to the Traditional Owners whose lands and waters we engage with across South Australia.
